Rothbart’s spell over the swan maidens is broken. The storm subsides, the moon comes out and a band of swans appear on the tranquil lake. Prince Siegfried is celebrating his coming of age. At this point Nina finally realices that her mother is trying to relive a failed past through her, and she’s freed from her mother’s chains. It’s pretty obvious, in my opinion, that the main theme of this movie is that of the protagonist, Nina, undergoing a psychosexual maduration, evolving from an undeveloped child to a full woman. There’s also the recurrent, easier to see theme of obsession with work, and the demands of the world of arts.
I also was not sure if she actually stabbed herself or was stilll hallucinating. Now that I think about it, Aronofsky is probably the closest we get to a « Western » Satoshi Kon. When I saw Black Swan in the theater I was just blown away, and felt a lot like ROMEO banned for possible bad behavior I feel after I watch Paprika.
